This Thanksgiving, We Are Celebrating Collaborative Efforts That Made Possible by Your Generosity.

EP4: How Suicide Prevention Efforts Create a Better Future

Based at Faculty of Social Sciences, the Hong Kong Jockey Club Centre for Suicide Research and Prevention (CSRP) developed an “Early Warning & Surveillance System for Suicide Prevention”, utilising big data from the Coroner’s Court, media reports, and social media.

The “Suicide Risk Index”, calculated through machine learning, reflects the current suicide situation in Hong Kong, issuing warning signals from ‘low’ to ‘crisis’ levels via a web-based dashboard. This system addresses the delay in official suicide statistics, providing timely data for policymakers, community interventions, and targeted actions.

Additionally, the project offers educational materials to identify warning signs, risk factors, and stigma, promoting public awareness and mental health, and providing guidance for supporting those with suicidal thoughts.
