Our Footprints in the Main Building

HKU Heritage Fund Tiles

Together, let’s preserve our Legacy for the Future.
Support HKU Heritage Fund

The Encaustic floor tiles laid along the walkways of the Main Building are filled with footprints of generations of students, staff and alumni since 1912.

The pattern on the surface of these “Unglazed Encaustic” tiles is made of different colours of clay. It appears inlaid into the body of the tile so that the design remains as the tile is worn down. These surviving Encaustic tiles in the Main Building are one of the best examples of the use of such materials in Hong Kong with regard to the design and intactness.

The HKU Heritage Fund is established to preserve the Main Building, and to ensure this legacy will be enjoyed by the generations to come.

You are cordially invited to Add Colour to Your Personalised Tile to support the HKU Heritage Fund. Simply choose a tile pattern, add your favourite colours, and make a donation to the HKU Heritage Fund. A personalised tile will be generated for you to keep. It also makes perfect gift for your loved ones.

As a token of our thanks, a set of limited-edition Main Building pins will be given to the first 500 Tile Donors.
